Anatomy and Physiology of the Skin

Skin is the largest organ of the body.

The skin consists of four distinct layers: the epidermis, the basement membrane zone, the dermis and the subcutaneous layer.

Functions of the skin:
1. Physical barrier against friction and shearing forces.
2. Protection against infection, chemicals, ultraviolet irradiation, particles.
3. Prevention of excessive water loss or absorption.
4. Ultraviolet induced synthesis of vitamin D.
5. Temperature regulation.
